Welfare Agencies Anxious For Relief

Newcastle Herald

Tuesday May 14, 2002

THE poor, old and weak across the Hunter will face an increasing struggle for survival without increased help from the Government in today's Budget, according to Hunter welfare agencies.

The Hunter Community Council, a network of social welfare agencies in the Hunter, wrote to Treasurer Peter Costello to request increased grants to cover expanding insurance costs and a new Community Services Award in NSW.

Council chairman Cec Shevels said the Budget would be an important one for the social welfare sector.

He said at least 90% of Hunter agencies relied almost entirely on government grants.

Mr Shevels said factors such as increased superannuation levies and substantial workers' compensation costs also were eating into government grants.
